Whether you’re shopping for supplies like notebooks, pencils, erasers, clips and the like – or more expensive items like school clothes or a laptop – every penny counts when it comes time for the kids to head back to school. Most parents spend frustrating, frantic hours in the aisles and in line at WalMart, Target, J.C. Penney, Office Depot, Staples, etc. picking up required supplies from a list they got from school, along with new clothes, shoes and all of those other back-to-school necessities. Start with a list and a budget.

Many schools or teachers will distribute either a suggested or required supplies list, but even if they don’t, you’ll save both time and money by making a list before you start to shop. You’ll be able to do some comparison shopping, plus you’ll ensure that your child has everything needed for that all-important first day of school.

A budget will help in more ways than one. Not only will it help you plan ahead for the expenses, but it will help your child learn to set priorities and learn the difference between needs and wants. It’s also very helpful in saying “no” to those irresistible, trendy “must have” items that aren’t really necessary.

Buy in Bulk.

For basics like paper products and supplies you’ll save money when you buy in bulk, or watch for sales and pick up extra when the price is lower. It’s a great idea to set aside a special storage area in your home for school supplies, and look for the best bargains all year around. You can also keep unused (or even used) items from the prior year there so they’re easy to find when needed. Start early with back to school shopping – June or July at latest. Some of the big retailers become more aggressive in their back to school sales as August approaches, so you probably will find some great deals then, but you may also find the shelves are empty. Better to find consistently good prices early on than to wait and not find what you need at all.

Think versatility when shopping for clothing.

It’s tempting to buy pre-matched outfits for the sake of convenience, but it’s more budget-friendly, cuts back on the laundry and allows your child more variety to find clothing items that can be mixed and matched. You’ll effectively be getting two or even three times as many outfits for the same price.
